The Client Journey
One query we regularly receive from people is what is the process, or journey that a child or young person takes with FAB and the services we provide in our participating hospitals. We hope this guide helps you.
NB: FAB's service is only available in our participating eye clinics. See Hospital locations.
1. See your GP
Firstly, you will need to make contact with your GP and share your concerns about your child. If appropriate, they will refer you to the NHS eye clinic.
2. Referral from the Eye Clinic
Once you have been referred to the eye clinic, you can ask the clinic to refer you to FAB.
3. Being a FAB Client
Once a referral is made the child/young person plus parents/carers where appropriate meet the clinical psychologist for an initial appointment. Further sessions can then be organised once a course of action is decided and agreed eg Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). We have found most clients require some intervention at school. Follow up appointments may be with the young person individually, parents/family members or a combination of both. The clinical psychologists will liaise with schools and engage other agencies as agreed.
An initiative to avoid face to face appointments and travel in response to the Covid pandemic was the use of telephone and video appointments. This approach was very successful and continues where appropriate.
